Medpets is a leading online pet pharmacy, located in Roosendaal (Netherlands), with an extensive range of veterinary products and pet care products. The company serves a large and growing European customer base every day and processes a high volume of e-commerce orders with widely varying package sizes.

Within this context, an efficient, error-free and scalable logistics operation is essential to continue to guarantee a high level of service to customers.

The logistical challenge

Due to the strong growth of the product range and increasing demand, the proportion of larger L and XL packages, in particular, increased significantly. As a result, the existing logistical method became increasingly labour-intensive and placed a high physical burden on employees. In addition, manual process steps increased error sensitivity and limited scalability during peak periods.

Medpets was looking for a solution that could not only increase capacity, but would also contribute structurally to cost control, ergonomics and sustainability. Crucial was that the new system would seamlessly integrate with the existing Warehouse Management System and leave room for future growth.

Vanas's solution

Vanas designed a fully integrated intralogistics concept that brings automation, software integration and ergonomic design together in one efficient whole. The solution was specifically tailored to Medpets' product flows and operational reality.

The heart of the installation consists of an internal transport system with roller conveyors, linked to an automatic packing line. Boxes are set up, filled, closed and labeled automatically. Each box is provided with a unique LPN (Licence Plate Number) barcode, which is linked to the WMS in real time. This ensures full traceability and virtually eliminates the risk of human error.

The automatic box sealer measures each box individually and cuts it to size. This avoids excess air and reduces cardboard consumption considerably, without sacrificing product protection.

After labeling, the packages are transported via roller conveyors to a DARB sorter. This sorting machine reads labels automatically and sorts up to 2,000 parcels per hour to the correct shipping location. The installation was also expanded with a separate line for larger and heavier packages, as well as envelope shipments, making the system versatile and future-proof.

The logistical process in practice

Products are collected from shelf racks by batch picking and supplied to manual well walls. Here, multi-orders are consolidated directly into shipping boxes, while single SKU orders are processed at ergonomically designed packing tables.

The boxes are automatically presented to packers via conveyor belts, so that movements are kept to a minimum. After filling, each box is scanned, linked to the order in the WMS and automatically transported further through the packing line. This ensures a continuous, stable flow without interruptions, even during peak loads.
